Casting on

Casting on

There are many different cast on techniques and many of those techniques these days now have a YouTube tutorial. It is important to remember that when following a right-handed pattern, a lefty will be knitting to a different direction to what the instruction is suggesting. Why a reminder you say? It is important to remember this, when you need to cast on or pick up stitches for shoulders and sleeves, for front button bands for cardigans and etc.

For example, if you are asked in the pattern to PU stitches on the wearers right side and then follow a specific set up instruction. As a lefty knitter you have two options:

1. Move to the opposite shoulder instruction in the pattern, while still working the right-side shoulder.

2. You continue reading the right-side shoulder instructions but read them backwards.

First approach to PU stitches on the shoulders is very relevant when casting on or off for necklines and increasing for underarms. The second option is more relevant when knitting lace where a specific pattern needs to appear at a particular place. Or let’s say the lace you are knitting is not symmetrical on both shoulders.
